Airshow: Russian Demo Team Pilot Dies

The commander of the team called Russian Knights Air Demonstration team died Sunday, August 16, 2009 when his SU27 collided with his teammate. Col.. Igor Tkachenko ejected himself. The other two are in stable condition. Some other people were hurt, a woman is in stable condition.

Teterboro Air Traffic Controllers Suspended

Federal Aviation Administration has suspended Teterboro air traffic controller and a supervisor on duty during the mid air collision between a Piper PA-32R-300 and a Eurocopter AS350 VA that crashed on Saturday, August 8, 2009 over the Hudson River near Hoboken, New Jersey.

Helicopter/Plane Collides in Midair

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the midair collision between a Eurocopter AS 350 VA (N401LH) and a Piper PA-32R-300 (N71MC) that crashed over the Hudson River near Hoboken, New Jersey on Saturday, August 8, 2009. Both pilots were certified to fly. All nine people died in total. Six on the helicopter and three on the airplane.

According to the National Transportation Safety Board it states that the helicopter departed West 30th Street Heliport (JRA), New York, New York, for a sightseeing tour at 11:52 A.M. The airplane departed at Teterboro Airport (TEB), Teterboro, New Jersey, at 11:49 A.M. and the airplane was heading to Ocean City Municipal Airport (26N), Ocean City, New Jersey.

On Saturday, August 8, 2009 the day of the accident, Teterboro Air Traffic Control Tower staff consisted of five controllers and at the time of the accident, the tower was staffed with two controllers.

At 1148:30, the Teterboro Air Traffic Control Tower controller cleared the airplane for takeoff on frequency 119.50.
Teterboro Air Traffic Control Tower controller told the pilot of the Piper PA-32R-300 and the pilot of Eurocopter AS 350 BA to remain at or below 1,000 feet. The Teterboro Air Traffic Control Tower did not told neither of the aircrafts of other airplanes in the radar. The Teterboro Air Traffic Control Tower controller was engaged in a phone call and it wasn't business related. Teterboro Air Traffic Control Tower tried to contact the pilot of the Piper PA-32R-300 and the pilot never responded back.

The helicopter pilot was giving some passengers some sight seeing. Then, when the helicopter went mid-river west of the heliport and climbing through 400 feet. The helicopter turned southbound to follow the Hudson River. The helicopter continued climbing southbound until 1153:14, when it and the airplane collided at 1,100 feet.

The Eurocopter AS 350 BA (N401LH) was recovered on Sunday, August 8, 2009 and the Piper PA-32R-300 (N71MC) on Tuesday, August 11, 2009. The wreckage went to a facility in Delaware.

Helicopter/Plane Collides in Midair

On Saturday, August 8, 2009 a Piper PA-32R and a Eurocopter AS 350 BA collided over the Hudson River. All nine people aboard both aircraft are dead. They were both flying about 1,000 feet.
